Can You Leave a Car at Midway Airport for Two Weeks?

Preparing a car that will sit for 14 days
None of this is complicated, and it takes about ten minutes.
Before you leave home
- Check the battery if it is more than three years old. Two weeks of sitting is exactly the situation that finishes off a battery already on its way out — and Chicago winters accelerate that.
- Fill the tank, or nearly. A fuller tank reduces condensation in the fuel system, and you will not want to hunt for a gas station on the drive home at midnight.
- Check your tire pressure. Tires lose pressure slowly while parked, and faster in cold weather.
- Take the parking pass and toll transponder off the windshield if you would rather not have them visible.
The things people forget
- Remove anything perishable. A forgotten grocery bag becomes a memorable problem after 14 days in August.
- Take your garage door opener with you, or at least out of sight.
- Clear the interior. Nothing visible, nothing valuable.
- Photograph the car before you hand over the keys. Good practice anywhere, and it takes five seconds.
- Note your row and space number, or photograph the sign. Two weeks is long enough to genuinely forget.
In winter, specifically
Chicago snow does what Chicago snow does. If a storm passes through while you are away, expect some clearing to be needed. Valet parking helps here — the car is handled by staff and brought to you rather than left for you to dig out with a rental scraper at 6 a.m.
Valet or self-park for a long trip?
For long stays, valet earns its premium more than it does on a quick overnight. Your car is stored by staff, it is moved if it needs to be, and it is brought around and running when you land — which matters much more after a fourteen-hour travel day than it does after a quick hop.
Self-park is the better value if you would simply rather keep your own keys. Both work fine for extended stays.
When you get back
